JMW Turner with Laman Fofana: Dark Waters

Tate Liverpool, Liverpool
27 September 2022 - 4 June 2023

Experience JMW Turner like never before, as his dramatic seascapes are intertwined with an immersive sound environment.

Turner had a lifelong fascination with the ocean, producing countless seascapes that encapsulated the immense power of the sea. Here, some of his most celebrated seascapes, sketches and works on paper are brought together with an immersive sound environment by contemporary artist and musician Laman Fofana. Despite working centuries apart, Turner and Fofana share a rich interest in the sea, particularly it’s dark connection to capitalism and colonialism, and its relationship with power and politics generally.

By pairing Turner with Fofana, the exhibition offers the opportunity to explore a celebrated artist in an entirely new light, while also considering the context of Liverpool’s maritime history and Tate’s location on the waterfront. From ferocious storms to breaking waves and elusive sea monsters, explore unique and dramatic maritime landscapes.
